If you are looking for a matcha latte recipe, which you can make easily at home, you’ve found the right place. Below I will show you an easy recipe, which I’m sure you and your friends or family will love :-).
Honestly, I’m in love with matcha ever since I tried it in one small village during my recent trip to Japan. You can’t get better matcha than the one prepared by a real Japanese tea master. We can’t all be tea ceremony gurus, but at least we can try;-). And I’m getting better with time and you will get there too, so check out my yummy matcha latte below.
But, first a few words about the wonderful Matcha
Ah, the almighty Matcha tea. You probably already have heard about it. It’s literally everywhere nowadays. If you want to know a little more about it and learn how to make a wonderfully delicious matcha latte at home, keep reading.
Basically, matcha is a high-quality green tea reduced into a fine powder and is very popular in Japan. Though, it got really trendy worldwide in the last few years. Matcha is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, thus it has the reputation of being a true elixir of youth. It’s often made with cow’s milk, thus matcha latte is a delightfully sweet and energizing drink you can enjoy daily.
My relationship with coffee has been pretty tumultuous (or abusive, I should say) in recent years! There are times when I swear by my morning coffee and heavily rely upon it to give me a boost for the day. Coffee is my hero without whom the day cannot begin, really. Or at least it used to be until I discovered this wonder called matcha.
There were days when caffeine abuse got completely wrong for me. Two coffee cups and I’m completely dehydrated for the rest of the day. My hands would begin shaking too.
So I try (for the sake of the survival of my loved ones!) to reduce my coffee consumption. But since I’m absolutely not a morning person, I still need something to wake me up. A warm drink preferably to start the day with a little sweetness to it. For this purpose, I now rely completely upon the delicious matcha latte recipe shown below!
But, what’s so special about Matcha? Matcha tea is consumed in its whole, which means the entire leaves are ground into powder, unlike other teas where the leaves are only infused in water. It is full of health benefits for the body and mind. This makes it a perfect choice to stock up on vitamins, nutrients, chlorophyll, and healthy catechins by the way!
And here is another advantage of matcha: it’s rich in caffeine but less so than coffee. Above all, thanks to the L-theanine (amino acid) it contains, its caffeine is absorbed slowly over a period of about 6 hours. That way you avoid the sudden, but the ephemeral crash effect of coffee. On the contrary, a cup of matcha tea gives you soft and long-lasting energy, which is perfect for a gentle awakening! And I love it!
I make it here in a latte version which is softer in taste and this method of preparation removes any trace of bitterness, that is sometimes found in matcha tea. You may have tasted it at Starbucks which gave the matcha latte its great popularity nowadays.
For a vegan-friendly version, I use oat or other nut milk mixed with two tablespoons of coconut milk in a blender. I don’t really recommend almond milk for this recipe which does not match very well to my taste with the aromas of matcha tea. But you can of course choose your favorite vegetable milk or just cow’s milk.
Which matcha tea to choose for your latte
There are 3 main quality categories of matcha green tea (though the classification isn’t yet conclusive and you can often find discrepancies among product descriptions of matcha sellers).
High-quality ceremonial matcha
There is the highest possible superior quality ceremonial matcha tea reserved until recently only for emperors( and honestly due to its high price such tea is mostly available for regular use to wealthy people). It will cost you a small fortune to even try it a few times, something along the $120+ price tag for a can of 30 grams. Such tea is used mainly for, well.. ceremonies in Japan. Drinking matcha during a ceremony is just a ritual for Japanese people and is a common tradition there.
Though, in recent years this tea became a trendy novelty and is gaining popularity worldwide. Some people say it’s just the next short-lived fad. Who knows, we’ll see if it remains popular for a few more years.
Preferably the ceremonial high quality is used to prepare matcha tea. Like the beautiful emerald matcha, I used here:
This one is somewhere between ceremonial and culinary grade and is perfect for making your daily matcha latte without breaking the bank ;-).
Culinary-grade matcha (also called kitchen matcha or cooking matcha)is suitable for the preparation of cakes or other recipes (you’ll easily notice the bland color of this matcha compared to the emerald bright vibrant green seen in ceremonial-grade matcha tea).
And an intermediate mid-range cooking matcha that is used for smoothies, yogurts, and especially lattes. For this matcha latte, you can buy on Amazon organic matcha tea of good quality here.
Mid-range cooking matcha
Culinary grade matcha
There is also the lowest quality grade matcha, which lacks almost any color and taste like this one:
Low-grade matcha
And I really recommend you don’t even bother buying such a thing unless you are really desperate to use something that you can barely call matcha tea in your recipes.
But don’t be discouraged from the sometimes confusing diversity of choices of many matcha brands and grades. You can find pretty decent and even great matcha brands on amazon or on other online shops, you just have to try a few brands and find your favorite matcha tea with a balance of manageable price and good quality.
Now, if you’ve found the Matcha you love like this really good and affordable matcha tea, we can move on to the easy homemade matcha latte.
How to Make Matcha Latte at Home
There’s nothing simpler, really. Heat the milk of your choice in a small saucepan. When the milk boils, pour it into a blender with half a teaspoon of matcha tea (1 whole spoon if you are used to green tea and a little bitterness does not scare you), one (generous) teaspoon of honey (or maple syrup or agave) and half a teaspoon of liquid vanilla extract. Mix everything for about 30 seconds. Pour into your favorite cup. Your matcha latte is ready to be enjoyed!
I recommend using a blender as it helps to avoid any lumps and also to get a nice foam on top of your latte, which I particularly appreciate.
If you don’t have a blender, you can also simply mix the ingredients directly into your cup. Pour the tea into the bottom of the cup and then add a small amount of warm milk. Whisk using a mini whisk. Traditionally a mini bamboo whisk is used (available here) but if you are not equipped with one, a spoon will do too. Watch out for the lumps, though! Then pour the remaining milk and honey (or another sweetener of your choice). Your latte drink is ready!
