You might want to get used to hearing about maca latte, it is becoming quite popular among those living a healthy lifestyle. The maca latte recipe ideas below are just a few ways to add it to your diet, it is such a versatile edible.

What Is Maca?

Maca is a herbaceous plant that has been cultivated in the Peruvian Andes for almost 2,600 years. Peru is the country which produces 90% to 95% of the maca sold internationally, although it is also produced in Bolivia and Ecuador on a much smaller scale.

The properties of the maca have been the reason many place it on a pedestal. It has shown to increase strength and libido, endurance, sports performance and the feeling of general well-being.

Maca is an adaptogen, so it helps the body adapt to stress situations by decreasing the hormone called cortisol.

It is also said to help regulate and increase the function of the endocrine system, the glands that produce the hormones necessary for essential body and metabolic functions such as fertility, sexual function, digestion, brain and physiology of the nervous system, and energy levels.

It sounds pretty awesome right?

Research About Maca

Gustavo F. Gonzáles Rengifo, biologist and endocrinologist director of the Laboratory of Endocrinology and reproduction of the Faculty of Sciences and philosophy of the Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia, has been studying maca for over 15 years.

In 2010, he and his team of scientists investigated the results of maca consumption in people in the Central Andes of Peru, a native region producing this plant since ancient times. Scientists took a sample of 1,000 inhabitants of the area and compared the health of those who did not consume maca to those who did. The score of regular consumers over 75 years of age was such that they did not seem to have actually aged.

The expert believes these benefits of the plant are due to the hostile conditions in which it grows, since it is grows at 4,000 meters above sea level, where almost nothing else grows. Peruvians have been cultivating it for at least 2,600 years, and that only shows how much have this plant contributed to their survive thru all this time.

Maca is quite accessible in its powder form nowadays. You can buy it in health food stores and use it in hot and cold drinks, and it’s even a great option for baking as it has a light nut earthy flavor.

THE BENEFITS OF THE MACA LATTE AND COFFEE SMOOTHIE

Due to the ingredients we use to prepare this smoothie, its nutritional value is very high.

Maca is a root plant native to Peru with some interesting benefits especially for long distance runners.

Historically, maca has been known to have been used by the incas to increase energy, stamina, and recovery time.

In addition to its benefits for physical performance, maca has also been associated with increased sexual desire and performance.

Maca has a high carbohydrate content and therefore its energy input is significant.

On the one hand, milk contains: carbohydrates (lactose) in amounts similar to many sports drinks; proteins (mainly casein) with slow digestion and absorption; and high natural concentrations of electrolytes, which we lose when we run and sweat.

As for coffee, caffeine reduces fatigue, increases concentration and alertness, and increases performance in aerobic and anaerobic activities.

Caffeine reduces stress perception (approx. 29%), so it can help runners withstand higher intensities training, which can mean an improvement in performance of 11.2%.

Caffeine after running can help you recover faster, as it can speed up the replacement of the glycogen used when running.

I consume “adaptogenic” plants every day and recently realized that I had never dedicated an article to them on the blog. So today I present to you one of my favorite morning drinks, which includes some of the adaptogens I consume most often in my daily life.

Many of you have contacted me saying that you want simple recipes, and make them with everyday ingredients that are easy to get.

Well, I know that ashwagandha and pine pollen really don’t run the streets and are still very hard to find, especially for those who live in more remote areas. But I firmly believe that the more demand there will be for somewhat more obscure ingredients like these, the more accessible and mainstream they will become.

Adaptogens are a unique class of plants that have been used for thousands of years to support and promote health and wellness. They function primarily as regulators and help the body adapt to changing situations and different stressors – hence their name ” adaptogenic “. In addition to helping manage stress and anxiety, they also help with hormonal balance, promote good mood, and support the immune system.

Because we live in a society where stress is omnipresent, I am convinced that everyone can benefit from the addition of adaptogens in their diet. If you think you have adrenal fatigue, thyroid problems or any kind of stress, I strongly suggest you to try them out. However, pregnant women should be careful and consult their physician before using any adaptogens or supplements.

Some of the adaptogens are well known already like maca, ashwagandha, the holy basil (tulsi), rhodiola, ginseng, licorice root, pine pollen, mucuna pruriens, and some medicinal mushrooms like chaga, reishi or cordyceps.

Adaptogens are available in various forms, including powder, dyes, capsules and herbs. My favorite ways to consume them are as tea (buying dried herbs), or as a powder that I can easily add to my smoothies, oatmeal, and morning elixirs (like this one!).

This Hazelnut Latte contains ashwagandha (great for stabilizing thyroid function and supporting the immune system), Pine pollen (a completely natural protein that helps improve libido and regulate hormones), and maca (perfect for supporting mood and giving you energy). This beverage is creamy, comforting, and absolutely delicious, in addition to being packed with healthy properties. A wonderful way to deal with the stress of the day and get it off to a good start.

Notes: I use organic hazelnut butter and it is by far the most delicious I have tasted. It makes this little elixir particularly divine. I highly recommend it, but of course, any other hazelnut butter(or homemade) will also work. As for adaptogens, you can use the ones you have at hand. I buy my adaptogens in natural food stores, but you can also find them online.

15. Adaptogenic Hazelnut Anti-Stress Latte (Vegan) Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup vegetable milk I used homemade almond milk
  • 1/3 cup infused coffee or instant coffee of your choice
  • 1 tbsp hazelnut butter
  • sweetener of your choice or 1 teaspoon of pure maple syrup
  • Adaptogens (optional, or of your choice )
  • 1 tsp maca powder
  • 1 tsp ashwagandha powder
  • 1 tsp Pine Pollen Powder

Method

Start by heating the milk in a small saucepan over low heat. Don’t worry if it breaks up or starts forming lumps, as it’ll be blended in the blender.
Once the mixture is hot, transfer to a blender with hot coffee, hazelnut butter, sugar or sweetener of your choice and the adaptogen powders.
Blend at high speed until the mixture is creamy and foamy. Give it a taste and add a little more sweetening as needed. Pour into a cup and serve immediately.

Done. Enjoy!

16. Black sesame Iced Maca latte Recipe

Black sesame Iced Maca latte Recipe

I’ve had a mini-obsession with black sesame seeds for quite some time. It started when I had a black sesame latte earlier this winter in a coffee shop here in L.A. It was so delicious, I dreamed about it for days. Then there was this tempeh bowl with black sesame sauce. Then my friend posted this beautiful coconut sesame black ice cream on her Instagram account (I still hope she’ll share the recipe soon ;)).

Here I combined the powder with vegetable milk (I used homemade cashew milk, but any milk will do quite well), a few dates to sweeten slightly, a bit of coconut butter for a smoother texture, and a touch of vanilla and cardamom to enhance the flavors. It changes the way you experience traditional latte and it’s really delicious! I hope you try it!

Notes: you will find black sesame powder in Asian grocery stores. You can also do it yourself at home.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cup vegetable milk (almonds, cashew, coconut, etc.)
  • 1 1/2 tbsp black sesame powder
  • 2-3 very tender pitted dates (or more to taste)
  • 1 tbsp coconut butter  (optional, but adds a nice creamy texture)
  • 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon of ground cardamom
  • 1 tbsp Maca

Method

  1. Mix all ingredients in a high-speed blender. Taste and adjust by adding more dates (or honey) if desired.
  2. Pour into a glass filled with ice. Sprinkle black sesame seeds if desired, then serve.

Enjoy!

Another exotic and trendy Iced latte you can and should try is the dalgona coffee. You’ll be amazed, I promise ;-)!
